Aug 10, Colombo: Dr. Wimaladharma Abeywickrema, the Chairman of Sri Lanka's power monopoly, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), says that the strike by the CEB employees is an act of destruction.

The CEB employees are to launch a continuous strike action from Friday against the alleged suppression of CEB employees and attempts to privatize the customer service centers in several areas. The Join Trade Union Alliance of the CEB has called the strike today and many trade unions except the engineers' union are expected to participate.

The major demand of the action is to win a salary increase granted only to the engineers and to get the salary anomalies removed, a spokesman of the Joint Trade Union Alliance said.

The Chairman of the CEB said that the authority has agreed to resolve the salary issue of the CEB employees in November. He accuses that the Joint Trade Union Alliance has violated the agreement with the CEB management.
He further said that the strike at a time when a major examination is held and a severe drought is prevailing is a disruptive act. "
